destination guide: Cairns

getting to Cairns from the airport

Cairns Airport (CNS) makes getting into the city easy as there are several options available. The domestic terminal is easy to navigate and once you land you catch a ride in one of the following ways:

  • Hop on a shuttle - the shuttle into Cairns city centre usually costs $8-$13, for a one way trip. You’ll want to book your ride before you show up so check any one of the following places to get more information: Airport Connections, Coral Sea Coaches, FNQ Airport Shuttle, or Sun Palm Transport.

  • Hire a taxi/rent a car - If you hire a taxi you can expect to pay about $25 to get into the city. There are a lot of taxi services readily available and ready to take you to the city after you arrive. Car rental companies also have a few spots here so get on the web and reserve one if you want the freedom of having your own car to explore in.

things to do in cairns

Cairns is a destination in itself but use the city as a springboard to serious reef, rainforest and tableland adventures in Tropical North Queensland. Bounce one way and you’ll land in the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. Bounce the other way and you’ll land in the world’s oldest rainforest, also a World Heritage site, including the Daintree National Park. Bounce west up the range to the Atherton Tablelands and explore its photo worthy waterfalls and epic road trips.

Cairns city itself has a vibrant tropical vibe with bars, cafes and restaurants for endless alfresco dining. Laze around the Lagoon on the Esplanade like the locals do or visit the beautiful Northern beaches. Cairns is a little slice of heaven on earth and also the perfect home base to (even more) idyllic locations with Palm Cove and Port Douglas just a short drive away.

what to see

So many World Heritage-listed sites, so little time!

First things first, you have to see the Great Barrier Reef. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you move here) that you will want to spend an entire day taking in. Bring an underwater camera too because what you’ll see will blow you away. There are many operators from Cairns, Port Douglas or Mission Beach who will take you snorkelling, diving, boating, or just plain ole’ swimming at the reef.

Other places to see is the famous, Daintree National Park which stretches from the Mossman Gorge to Cape Tribulation. Or, why not spend a day waterfall chasing through the vibrant green rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands. If you want to experience all Tropical North Queensland has to offer, this is how you do it.

events enthusiasts welcome here

If you have a heart for adventure you’ll be sure to love the calendar of events in Tropical North Queensland. From mountain bike championships through the rainforest to indigenous dance festivals and foodie feasts on the reef, you’ll find an event your heart desires in the list below.

Check out what’s live in Queensland

the artisan in everyone

If art is your thing you’ll want to visit the Cairns Art Gallery. Start your Aboriginal art education at this little gem of a gallery in the heart of the city. Or visit the Cairns Museum to learn the story and history of Tropical North Queensland . Both have more than enough art and culture on display to satisfy the artist in you.

local secrets

With so much to see and do it can be overwhelming planning your day. The Cairns Esplanade has heaps of free attractions for families including the Lagoon for swimming, parks, BBQs and lots of space to get some sun. Not far from Cairns you can walk on the breathtaking beaches, snorkel, dive, and have marine life encounters. Walk through the rainforest, go hang gliding, hot air ballooning, white water rafting, skydiving and sailing.

For the young folk, Cairns is also a backpacker destination for travellers from all over the world. There are over 20 hostels in Cairns where you can “bunk it” for only about $15-$30 a night.

what to eat

Most of Cairns bars, restaurants and cafes are centrally located around the Esplanade however it is worth exploring around the streets to find other gems. You’ll always find a café for your breaky and espresso but some places don’t open too early because when people come to Cairns they stay out all night. The nightlife here is awesome. You’ll have a great time whether it’s at a bar or café, restaurant or pub. Just show up at The Esplanade with an appetite and you’ll find a place easily

wrapping up

Cairns is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination with the reef, rainforest and tablelands a stone’s throw away. Whatever outdoor adventure your heart desires, it can be fulfilled in Tropical North Queensland .  You’ll never, ever, ever be bored in Australia’s adventure capital and you’ll probably even meet some new mates here.
Come ready to explore & don’t forget to bring your sunscreen.
