destination guide: Cairns

getting to Cairns from the airport

Cairns Airport (CNS) makes getting into the city easy as there are several options available. The domestic terminal is easy to navigate and once you land you catch a ride in one of the following ways:

  • Hop on a shuttle - the shuttle into Cairns city centre usually costs $8-$13, for a one way trip. You’ll want to book your ride before you show up so check any one of the following places to get more information: Airport Connections, Coral Sea Coaches, FNQ Airport Shuttle, or Sun Palm Transport.

  • Hire a taxi/rent a car - If you hire a taxi you can expect to pay about $25 to get into the city. There are a lot of taxi services readily available and ready to take you to the city after you arrive. Car rental companies also have a few spots here so get on the web and reserve one if you want the freedom of having your own car to explore in.

things to do in cairns

Cairns is for travelers who like adventure and culture. There are coffee shops and cafes everywhere as well as restaurants, beautiful beaches, and of course the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is a little slice of heaven on earth. If you want to visit the reef, rainforest, or Carnivale in the neighboring city of Port Douglas, Cairns is the place to be.

what to see

You have to see the Great Barrier Reef. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you move here) that you will want to spend an entire day taking in. Bring an underwater camera too because what you’ll see will blow you away. There are many operators in Cairns who will take you snorkeling, diving, boating, or just plain ole’ swimming at the reef.

Other places to see are the famous Northern Beaches, Lake Placid, and the Daintree Rainforest. If you want to experience Cairns, this is how you do it.

sports enthusiasts welcome here

If you love home-grown sports you’ll be sure to see a rugby game in town. Locals here play to win and you can find them all over the city. Cazaly’s Stadium hosts international cricket games and costs only a few bucks. There are tons of adventurists and sports enthusiasts all over Cairns so if you’re a sports fan- you’re going to love it here.

the artisan in everyone

If art is your thing you’ll want to visit the Cairns Regional Gallery or the Cairns Museum. They both have more than enough art and culture on display to satisfy the artist in you. If you’re looking for live music, you can find it almost nightly at The Cairns Esplanade.

hidden gems

You can swim, bake in the sun, walk on the breathtaking beaches, snorkel, dive, watch whales, or walk through the rainforest. Just pick one and ask around. Cairns is a miniature Garden of Eden. The promenade near the pier has all sorts of fun things to do that are closer to the centre of town too. There’s a lagoon (fun for the kids) and lots of space to get some sun. You can even go hang gliding, ballooning, white water rafting, skydiving, and sailing.

Cairns is also a backpacker destination for hikers all over the world. There are over 20 hostels in Cairns where you can “bunk it” for only about $15-$20 a night. You’re going to think you died and went to an outdoorsman’s heaven.

what to eat

The Esplanade is where most of the nightlife and restaurants are found in Cairns. You’ll find that most places don’t open early because when people come to Cairns they stay out all night. The nightlife here is awesome. You’ll have a great time whether it’s at a bar or café, restaurant or pub. Just show up at The Esplanade with an appetite and you’ll find a place easily.

wrapping up

Cairns is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination. If there is an outdoor adventure you’ve been dreaming of- you can find a way to make it happen here. Whatever you’ll be doing and however you’ll be spending your time here, you’ll have a ton of options at one of the most visually stunning places on the earth. You’ll never, ever, ever be bored in Cairns and you’ll probably even meet some new mates here as well.

Come ready to explore & don’t forget to bring your sunscreen.
