A short 15 minutes from the city centre, Canberra Airport (CBR) is easy to reach. If you’re departing between 8am and 6:50pm take the Airport Express Shuttle Bus. If you’re leaving late, take a taxi, drop your car off at the terminal parking, or ride an Uber straight to the airport.
Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport (MEL) is 22km from the inner city, less than half an hour by car or taxi. To travel without hassle, catch the Skybus or Shuttle to city centre. If you’re driving in, you can park your car from around $17 a day.
There can be no better place to explore Australian history and national culture than the city where Australia itself began. Start your visit with a trip to the nation’s seat of government at Parliament House on Capital Hill. Then head to the Australian War Memorial for a beautiful and moving testament to Australians involved in war.
Once you’ve steeped yourself sufficiently in Australian history, continue your tour of national accomplishments with a trip to the Australian Portrait Gallery, followed by the National Gallery of Australia. Housing over 400 portraits, and 166,000 other works of art, their collection is more extensive Australia has to offer. If you prefer the sciences to the art visit Questacon, Canberra’s hands on technology centre, or discover what’s beyond our world at the Deep Space Museum.
But there’s more to Canberra than just Australia’s capital. The city is rapidly transforming, and Canberra’s New Acton precinct has an influx of public art and killer cafes just as hipster as Melbourne’s own.
Street art lined walls, scores of Arts Festivals and hipster Markets make Melbourne a culture hunter’s dream. Museums ranging from Aviation to Modern Art dot the city, and streets are littered with tiny galleries and shops full of curiosities.
Don’t worry, Melbourne’s cultural scene doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. The city has its own dedicated Arts Precint with performances from circus, singers and storytellers. With more than 39 theatres, 100 concert venues, and 800 bars, you’ll never find yourself stuck in Melbourne with a boring night in.
If you have more time, take your sightseeing outside of Melbourne for natural wonders that rival those of the city. Only an hour’s drive, Melbourne’s Yarra Valley is famous for its 80+ wineries, food markets, and serene vistas. A bit further afield, travelers can visit Grampians National Park. Filled with hiking trails, the park offers an opportunity to see rare spring wildflowers and indigenous rock art.
Whatever the reasons for your visit tigerair will fly you there, with cheap airfares all year round. Save on your flights to Melbourne or Canberra, and spend on a sensational holiday in these exciting cities.
