Explore The Great Barrier Reef
Home to some of the world's most fascinating marine life, it's easy to see why the Great Barrier Reef is a celebrated natural wonder. And, with tours departing from Cairns every day, there's no reason for you to miss out. For a full day of adventure, visit some of the most popular sites on a snorkelling tour or hop on a glass bottom boat tour and see it all while staying dry.
Head off shore to Fitzroy Island
If you want to spend more time at sea, plan a trip to Fitzroy Island and discover one of the region's most secluded pieces of paradise. After taking a dip at Welcome Bay, dry off and head to the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre to learn more about the local sea turtles, or take a stroll on Nudey Beach, which has been voted one of Australia's most beautiful beaches.
Discover the Daintree Rainforest
Once you're back on the mainland, head north to the Wet Tropics of Queensland and explore the Daintree Rainforest. To learn more about the diverse range of flora and fauna, follow the informative signs on the Dubuji Boardwalk, then head down to Emmagen Creek for a quick dip to cool off.
Go on a trip to Cape Tribulation
If you want to keep the adventure going, take the scenic drive to Cape Tribulation and spend a night at one of the secluded hotels by the water. Once you've settled in, sign up for a crocodile cruise at Thornton's Beach or take things down a notch with a horseback ride on the sand. On the way back to Cairns, be sure to make a pit stop in Port Douglas where you can grab a seaside meal to split up your drive.
Take a dip in the Esplanade Lagoon
Looking for something to do without leaving town? Take the short walk from the city centre to the Esplanade Lagoon. To make a day of it, get down early and grab a spot by the communal barbeques or, if you're visiting on a Saturday, skip the sausage sizzle and grab a meal from the local markets.
