Take a walk along Elizabeth Quay
Defined by the 29-metre tall Spanda sculpture towering over the Swan River, Elizabeth Quay is a stylish waterfront precinct that should be at the top of your list of things to do in Perth. After an afternoon on the boardwalk, grab something sweet from Gusto Gelato and find a spot to watch the sunset or, if you're hanging around after dark, grab a cocktail at Henry's Upstairs Bar before dinner.
Get up close with animals at Perth Zoo
From African lions to dingos, Perth Zoo lets you come face-to-face with some of the world's most fascinating animals. If you're travelling with the little ones, the zookeepers offer a variety of educational programs to keep them busy throughout the day, giving you some free time to visit the enclosures at your own pace. And with suggested itineraries available online, you can plan your visit before you touch down.
Take a tour of Fremantle Prison
If you're keen to walk in the footsteps of convicts past, take the short bus trip to Fremantle Prison and sign up for one of their guided tours. Visit the jail cells and exercise yards by day on the Behind Bars Tour or, if you're brave enough, take the Torchlight Tour and explore the dark hallways that once housed some of the country's most dangerous minds.
Escape the crowds at Scarborough Beach
Don't want to compete for towel space? Skip the crowds at Cottesloe and head north to Scarborough Beach for a relaxing day on the sand. After a day in the sun, take the short walk to The Sandbar for a bite to eat in their seaside dining room or, for a more casual vibe, grab some fish and chips from Peters by the Sea and chill out on the grass.
Take a day trip to Toodyay
For a change of pace, head south to the historic town of Toodyay. Here, you can explore Connor's Mill and the Newcastle Gaol Museum, which provide an inside look at life in Western Australia during European settlement. After you've made your way through town, tuck into a hearty pub lunch at Freemasons Hotel or grab something to go and enjoy a picnic by the Avon River. Before heading back to the city, be sure to stop off at a roadside stall and pick up some fresh fruit for the drive home.
Spend the day in the Swan Valley
Conveniently located just 25 kilometres from Perth, the Swan Valley is home to everything from cellar doors to kangaroo sanctuaries. If you're travelling with the kids, be sure to visit the Caversham Wildlife Park or, if you're with your mates, get stuck in to the local produce with a d'Vine wine tour, which operate daily from the CBD.
Take a ferry to Rottnest Island
Just a short ferry ride from the CBD, Rottnest Island is famed for its thriving quokka population, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. And while these little buggers are as cute as they come, there's plenty more to see and do during your visit. Hire a bike and cycle to the top of Oliver Hill or grab your snorkel and explore the coral reef at Salmon Bay. Whatever you do, don't forget to grab a bite to eat and a cold beer at Hotel Rottnest before heading back to the mainland.
